About 1 in 5 Houston adults is considered illiterate, experiencing difficulty in completing tasks such as filling out job applications. The goal of the Houston Adult Literacy Project is to build the capacity of adult education and literacy organizations in Houston, which support low-income, low-literacy adult learners to help them to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life. Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugee's (PAIR) mission is to empower refugee youth to become community leaders. Through mentoring, tutoring, college access, and leadership development programs, PAIR equips students with life and academic skills for success. ** This position includes rental assistance that is offered by PAIR Houston to VISTAs placed at this site. **

Member Duties:

As a Volunteer Coordinator VISTA, you will play a vital role in building volunteer capacity with the Adult Education Center volunteer program. You will gain skills in professional development training to implement and strengthen the volunteer recruitment program, assist in facilitating training initiatives, and evaluate the program. As a VISTA, you will assist in maintaining volunteer requirements and managing databases. In this role, you will mobilize local resources to increase the capacity of adult literacy programs to build lasting solutions to poverty.

Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens or is a person residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status. Applicants must be at least 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED. 

Preferred Qualifications:

·        Ability to work well collaboratively with a team 
·        Attention to detail 
·        Good organization and time management skills 
·        Ability to handle multiple projects at once  
·        Effective oral and written communication skills  
·        Experience with or interest in serving multicultural community members
·        Some College

Compensation: $1,755.32 per month
