About 1 in 5 Houston adults is considered illiterate, experiencing difficulty in completing tasks such as filling out job applications. The goal of the Houston Adult Literacy Project is to build the capacity of adult education and literacy organizations in Houston, which support low-income, low-literacy adult learners to help them to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life. 
 
Help generate resources to aid in the fight against adult illiteracy by serving with Civic Heart’s Youth Justice Program as a Resource Development VISTA
 
Support the mentoring program through coordinating mentor applications, trainings, matching and monitoring. The member will support the program resource and capacity building needs of the youth justice reinvestment fund with other non-profits. This role assists the program with all needs from administrative to resource development. This ties in with adult literacy due to the exposure it provides to community work and the interactions with other volunteers and non-profits.

Member Duties: Become a Resource Development VISTA and play a vital role in developing and implementing! Focusing on building capacity and grant funding within The Alliance Resettlement Services Department to serve the low-income-low literacy adult community building developmental capacity and community networks within the host organization. The Resource Development VISTA will implement a resource development and stewardship plan for the organization. The VISTA member will assist with strengthening community partnerships for collaborative projects and funding opportunities, which allows for streamlined and expanded services. Additionally, the Resource Development VISTA will strengthen relationships with donors, which will improve The Alliance's ability to sustainably serve a low-income adult literacy client population. The VISTA will mobilize local resources to increase the capacity of adult literacy programs to build lasting solutions to poverty. 
 
Work Schedule: Full Time 
Stipend Amount: $1,755.32 Per Month

Minimum Requirements
 
Applicants must hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens or is a person residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status. Applicants must be at least 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED. 
 
Preferred Qualifications 
·        Ability to work well collaboratively with a team 
·        Attention to detail 
·        Good organization and time management skills 
·        Ability to handle multiple projects at once  
·        Effective oral and written communication skills  
·        Experience with or interest in serving multicultural community members 
·        Some College
